Your Most Frequently Asked Questions about ABS (Anti-lock Braking Systems)

What is the history of anti-lock braking systems (ABS)?

After a difficult start in the 1970s, when technology couldn't create an ABS that would meet the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) standards, American trucking associations were able to halt implementation of the anti-lock brake requirements on new trucks.  However, while Americans forgot about ABS, our European counterparts were working diligently to create an ABS that would improve truck safety for both tractors and trailers.  Once the European Economic Council required ABS on all Class 8 trucks the NHTSA quickly followed suit.

What is ABS supposed to do?

ABS mandates changes to heavy duty air brake systems that affect:

What this means is there must always be full-time electrical for ABS.    Therefor, the electrical assemblies used on trucks must be right sized and must never accidentally disengage.

What exactly are the NHTSA's rules concerning ABS?

Does ABS reduce stopping distances?

Not always.  In many instances, the stopping distance will still be the same.   What ABS does is offer drivers and extra degree of safety for those unexpected situations out on the road.  Since ABS prevents lock-up, the odds of jack-knifing are greatly reduced.

Why install ABS electrical assemblies if my truck/trailer doesn't have ABS?

For your safety and peace of mind, it's best to use ABS electrical assemblies such as Philatron's ABS Stallion.  This way, you never have to worry whether the tractor or trailer you hook up to is ABS equipped.  With ABS Stallion, you've already met NHTSA's stringent safety regulations and can confidently drive on America's roads and highways.

What are the Unique Features of ABS Stallion?

Philatron's ABS Stallion is guaranteed not to disengage from a pull force of up to 352 pounds!  The industry average is 47 pounds.  This is extremely important since the NHTSA has mandated that the ABS must have constant electrical power at all times.

ABS Stallion is guaranteed to perform in temperatures from a frigid -70 F to a scalding +440 F.  The Xenoy plugs are guaranteed not to corrode or freeze to the socket (some metal plugs often freeze in cold temperatures).   The "D" brass contacts are tin plated to protect against corrosion.   With weather and abuse resistant jackets, the jackets will reduce down time and increase profits.

Where can I purchase ABS Stallion?

ABS Stallion, along with top sellers Black Stallion cables and Stallion Flex II air lines, are sold at distributors throughout the United States.  For the name of a distributor near you, email us at truckingdept@philatron.com or just call Philatron toll free at (800) 421-3547 and ask for our Heavy Duty Trucking Division.
